IWCS Posts Strong SOL Results, Outpaces State in Every Subject

Isle of Wight County Schools (IWCS) has released the division’s 2024–2025 Standards of Learning (SOL) results, showing student performance that exceeds statewide averages across all tested subjects. The results highlight continued recovery from pandemic-era declines and demonstrate areas where IWCS students are excelling.

Overall, writing, math, and history remained steady, while science showed a slight increase and reading experienced a modest dip. Most notably, IWCS students outperformed the state by eight percentage points in mathematics, underscoring the division’s strong academic growth.

Two schools made especially significant gains in science this year: Georgie Tyler Middle School and Smithfield Middle School each improved their science pass rates by 10 points or more, a milestone that reflects the hard work of students, teachers, and staff in strengthening instruction and achievement in this critical subject.

“I am very pleased to share that Isle of Wight County Schools continues to perform at or above the state average across all tested subjects and many of our schools have experienced year to year gains,” said Superintendent Dr. Theo Cramer. “This consistency reflects the hard work of our students and educators, and it underscores the strong foundation we are building for long-term academic success. While we are proud of these results, we remain focused on continuous improvement and ensuring that every child in IWCS has the opportunity for success.”

Over the past several years, IWCS has consistently demonstrated improvement and resilience while rebounding from pandemic-related learning loss.

A more detailed analysis of the SOL results will be presented to the Isle of Wight County School Board at its meeting on September 11, 2025. Additional information is available on the Virginia Department of Education's School Quality Profile page at https://schoolquality.virginia.gov/.
