Mrs. Futrell has been in healthcare since she was in high school as a 17 year old student. Growing up in eastern North Carolina, her school district offered this same program that she is now blessed to be teaching. "My teachers provided valuable guidance and opportunities while encouraging me to pursue a career in healthcare". After completing the Nurse Aide program at 18 years old, she began working at a Long Term Acute Care Hospital that specialized in rehabilitation on paraplegics and quadriplegics, long term intravenous medications, and vent weaning. Mrs. Futrell was able to use the knowledge and experiences she was exposed to while going to nursing school.
She graduated with an Associates in Nursing from Nash Community College. After marrying her husband they moved to Isle of Wight county and she began working as a Registered Nurse at Riverside Regional Medical Center. There she spend 5 years of her nursing career working on the telemetry unit and labor & delivery unit. After having her second child she transitioned from hospital nursing to community health nursing specifically the school setting. She has been employed with IWCS since 2020 and began working as the school nurse at Windsor Elementary for 3 years. In March 2024, she transitioned into the classroom as the lead instructor/educator for the Nurse Aide program. She is currently furthering her education with Radford University's RN-BSN program and will obtain her Bachelors of Nursing in 2025.
Mrs. Futrell has many goals while being an educator of this program. Her main goals are to encourage, advocate, and expose her students to as many health careers as possible. The CTE Nurse Aide courses are offered to both SHS and WHS juniors and seniors and she looks forward to working with the students of Isle of Wight County schools as they explore their interest in healthcare through the nurse aide program.
