SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL ARMY JROTC PROGRAM

History

The idea of combining military training and education began in 1820 with Captain Partridge, who founded West Point. Eventually, this combination was extended to high schools as well. In 1916, the Congress of the United States saw a need for leadership-building programs and installed the National Defense Act of 1916, and thus, the first JROTC program officially opened in 1917 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Later, in 1964 JROTC was expanded from Army to all branches. In 1973, females were allowed to join JROTC as well, and since and women have grown to make up 40% of the Corps of Cadets.

SHS AJROTC

The Smithfield High School AJROTC Program officially became effective on January 1st, 1993 by order of The Secretary of the Army. The program then began with cadets during SY 93-94 and has been an Honor Unit with Distinction (HUD) since its inception.

The Cadet Creed

I am an Army JROTC Cadet.

I will always conduct myself to bring credit to my family, country, school, and the Corps of Cadets.

I am loyal and patriotic. I am the future of the United States of America.

I do not lie, cheat, or steal and will always be accountable for my actions and deeds.

I will always practice good citizenship and patriotism.

I will work hard to improve my mind and strengthen my body.

I will seek the mantle of leadership and stand prepared to uphold the Constitution and the American way of life.

May God grant me the strength to always live by this creed.
