Student critiques of peer and professional work are used to improve personal writing skills.

The instructional goal is to enhance a student's appreciation of literature through the study of both classic and contemporary American literature. Students make and analyze persuasive oral presentations with attention to accurate evidence and effective delivery.
Students identify themes and characterizations in American literature that reflect history and culture. Students also identify contributions of other cultures to the development of American literature.
Writing focuses on clear and accurate personal, business, and technical correspondence and research reports. Students develop expository and persuasive compositions by locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and citing pertinent information.
Emphasis is on organization and accuracy.

Emphasis is also placed on vocabulary development, study and research, grammar usage, listening and speaking skills, and all aspects of composition, culminating in writing and orally presenting a research project. Reading novels is required. This class receives honors weighted credit.

Through their writing and reading, the course will emphasize the expository, analytical, and argumentative writing that forms the basis of academic and professional communication.
Students will learn to read primary and secondary sources carefully, to synthesize material from these texts in their own compositions, and to cite sources using conventions recommended by professional organizations such as the Modern
Language Association (MLA), the University of Chicago Press (The Chicago Manual of Style), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Council of Biology Editors (CBE).
