Health and P.E.

The health segment of the class focuses on the effects of alcohol and other drugs, consumer health, disease prevention and control, first aid, and personal health, growth, and wellness. Health emphasizes methods of transmission and prevention of diseases, knowledge of symptoms of sudden illness and appropriate first aid, stages of a workout and training principles, and how nutrition relates to physical fitness. Instruction will also focus on attaining the certification level for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

The physical education segment teaches personal wellness, body management, and sports and leisure. The class includes cardiorespiratory endurance and the execution of team sport fundamentals. A student with an IEP or 504 plan may substitute

Adaptive Physical Education (77001S and 77002S) for this class, upon the recommendation of the IEP or 504 committee.
 
Health, PE 10, and Driver Education (No Behind-the-Wheel Component) 74050G

Prerequisite: Health and PE 9

The health section of the class considers the effects of alcohol and other drugs, mental health, marriage, parenthood, family relationships, and personal health, growth, and wellness.

The physical education section focuses on personal wellness, body management, and sports and leisure. It emphasizes physical fitness and the skills and basic knowledge of at least four lifetime sports.

Driver education (classroom instruction) which is also included at this level, examines sections of Virginia state law that regulate the highway/transportation system: handling characteristics and safety considerations of recreational vehicles, mapreading skills, computing distances, planning routes, and identifying the major components of a motor vehicle.

A student with an IEP or 504 plan may substitute Adaptive Physical Education (77001S and 77002S) for this class, upon the recommendation of the IEP or 504 committee.
 
Advanced PE I 76400G

Prerequisite: Health and PE 9 and Health, PE 10, and Driver Education

This is an elective physical education unit. Instruction may focus on CPR, conditioning, exercise physiology, basic first aid, seasonal sports, aerobics, and team activities.
 
Advanced PE II 76500G

Prerequisite: Health and PE 9 and Health, PE 10, and Driver Education

This is an elective physical education unit. Seasonal sports, aerobics, conditioning, and team activities are taught. Individual and lifetime recreation activities are taught.
